I still think strikers is a waste of time without a midfield that can compete and retain the ball.

The ones we have have shown they can score goals in front of a midfield that can do that.
I'd be happy with another player like Slivka to be honest, does a bit of everything decently well and gets stuck in.
With two players like that in the middle we'd be a bit better defensively and it'd allow Mallan/ Gauld/ Allan some space to link up and do what they're better at, creating.

I also wonder if McLaren's poor form has anything to do with getting him cheaply at the end of the season.
He's barely played and when he has he's been thrown on with little time to do anything. Maybe he's been told to stay fit and prep for then.

If we sign Futacs be prepared for lots of route one with a lightweight midfield. Smacks a bit of desperation, plus he's quite old and has never been the fittest of players so I don't see it being great.

Pre-contracts would be good, unfortunately we have neither the money or a manager willing to utilise them.
Lennon doesn't seem to like them at all and prefers to work in real time, which kinda goes against all the stuff he's said about building for a strong future.

January is a rubbish time to have to sign players and it makes signing quality difficult, forcing us to look at loans because he'd rather have a player now than prepare forthe following season.
So we get mixed results for 4-5 months an then look at signing players that we've brought in already or lose out because other teams pay more for the form the player showed with us.

I thought Swanson was decent - whenever he came into the side he showed spirit and ability (utterly destroyed Brown at Easter Rd at the end of last season for the whole time he played), but there must have been more to it behind the scenes.

I'd like to see Gauld come in but it's unusual for the press to have a story of interest at all, it's never how we do business, so I'm sceltical there's much in it.

Maybe on a pre contract for next season but what use is he to us right now when we need to turn out season around?

Can't afford to wait a month or two for him to regain match fitness and form.

I said the same thing about Allan before we brought him back on loan before, thankfully it worked out pretty well.

If we don't sign harder working midfielders that can shut the ball down and win/ pass it Allan will be ineffective if he comes back again.

Gauld is another lightweight attacking midfielder too.

At this rate we'll be playing 3 or 4 number 8s in midfield with none of them putting a tackle in or closing the ball down.

I agree with someone else who said it before - our problems stem from midfield;

The forwards didn't suddenly all become gash since last season, they just aren't good enough to win a game on their own.

Losing SJM and McGeouch, with Allan going back to Celtic, means we're missing two hard working players that cover ground, close the ball down and can tackle but also carry/ pass it and find space to support it in wide areas plus an attacking passer and set piece taker that can carve a defence open and beat a man or 3.

It's a big ask to replace it with our budget and we haven't.

If we don't find players who can control a midfield like we became accustomed to there's no point signing strikers just to watch them all fail miserably.
